bird that sounds like a slide whistle

Then it rests about 20 seconds and starts again....Help! The bird you thought of sounds just like the one I was looking for. Any other ideas, anyone? Gives one quick whistle, sounds like when a human whistles for a dog, then pauses for anywhere from 10 seconds to 2 minutes.


I live up a hill from White River in Indiana, and hear it every night from my front porch around 11 to midnight (like several said) with approx 20 seconds between whistles, and always the same note. I've found an almost matching tone for the Golden Crowned Sparrow, but it doesn't change notes.

And only when you pass by their area. I whistle they answer.

I have listened for it at dusk, hoping to see it, but it doesn't whistle until full darkness descends! None of the YouTube vids match what I'm hearing. It comes from several of the trees near our home. It whistles after night fall when not many other birds are singing.

Thanks for trying to help me though. But the bird I hear whistles 2 notes just like the wolf/cat call. Well the while is the same high pitched note. We live in NE Ohio on edge of woods. Only at night. Mireille, I heard this in my woods last night (I'm in Annapolis, MD) and in searching online to solve the mystery found your comment. An epiphany! This is a first. It is more likely a raptor. I don't remember hearing it other years. I have several here too.

Now it's almost a frantic whistle. What is it?? I don't know what bird it is but may be it is a pokemon. Like a warning of sorts.

The bird begins around 9pm or so.

I get a bunch of birds in my garden (mostly sparrows, starlings, dunnocks, finches and a few friendly blackbirds) so it's hard to see what's doing it. Babies! And focus on the single whistle.

It's 8:15pm in southern Ontario (Canada). Are you sure it wasn't a fisher cat. Trying to figure out whether this is a bird or insect!

We have lots of mockingbirds here, and they sing in late spring and early summer.
