WIth the Unit’s trail-worthy geometry, it only seems fitting. As you ride, the loose spoke pierces the rim tape, and suddenly you have a flat. Also, the WTB ST i30 rims and tubeless-ready WTB Ranger tires are a match made for bikepacking. I’ve always been a fan of the Rangers and really liked the 2.6” versions. As important as it is to have a reliable bike and pack as light as you can, choosing the right route is perhaps the key to your enjoyment.

The rear end was more compliant and soft than other bikes I’ve tried recently. The two times I climbed it with the Unit I cleared both pitches. Run after run, I was able to push harder as I became more comfortable on the bike and more familiar with the trails. Otherwise, there are a few componentry specs that I really liked, such as the 180mm front brake rotor. The bike is also significantly longer. The Unit X has a lot of good qualities that you see in other rigid steel trail bikes—think Surly Krampus and Tumbleweed Prospector—with a few modernized tricks, like a longer stance and steeper seat tube angle. If you missed the tires, check them out WTB’s new rims are outfitted with TCS 2.0 (Tubeless Compatible System). Not a deal breaker, but something I noticed. Moreover, it simply felt comfortable. Most of all, rigidx steel bikes like the Kona Unit X epitomize how bikepacking rigs came to be, and Kona made a lot of excellent changes that represent how these bikes should continue to evolve. They’re fast and still offer a surprising amount of traction.I was quite anxious to get this bike out on our local rowdy and rooty trails. It’s a bike that can’t be pigeonholed and truly works well for a lot of different surfaces and scenarios. Ideal for most styles of riding, everywhere from Cross Country, All Mountain and Gravity trails, they are heavy duty but are of a desirable weight. The average bikepacking trip should be based around riding between 25-75 miles (40-120 km) per day, depending on the weight of your load, the difficulty of the terrain ... It tracked beautifully, felt incredibly stable, and it was quite fast, too.

Of course, that might up the bottom line by $60, but it would be worth it. This firmly planted the front wheel, and coupled with the Unit X’s relatively heavy build, made it a little challenging to lift up the front end at times. It’s not uncommon that I make it over one of them and spin out on the other.
